Psychedelic Republicans Trading Cards by John Allen Wooden

  PSYCHEDELIC REPUBLICANS

Psychedelic Republicans was a series of utterly bizarre, totally real trading cards that I conceived and produced in 2004 as an offshoot of my former political parody website WHITEHOUSE.ORG. Published under the Chickenhead Productions shingle, they featured the mind-bending Photoshop stylings of artist Chuck Graef, reimagining GOP power players of the era as epic drug-addled hallucinations. Because why not?

The now-defunct accompanying psychedelicrepublicans.com website put it best:

"Collect them all, and gaze on in helpless, pupil-dilating wonder as your favorite C-SPAN stars morph into groovy explosions of technicolor conservatism!"

There were 24 cards in all: George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Laura Bush, Lynne Cheney, Ann Coulter, John Ashcroft, Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott, Orrin Hatch, William Rehnquist, Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, Antonin Scalia, Rush Limbaugh, Condoleeza Rice, Jeb Bush, Henry Hyde, Karl Rove, Ari Fleischer, Katherine Harris, Pat Robertson, and last-but-also-least: Dan Quayle. The backs of the cards included absurdist "fun facts" including Christian Coalition Rating and "Spirit Animal."

Dare I say they were freaking awesome, but I quickly learned the grim business realities of the trading card world: there are sports cards collectors, and entertainment card collectors. If you're not producing either of those, stores looked at you like you were some acid-addled freak – which while not true, might as well have been. Subsequently, the project was a pretty much a financial debacle. I blew much of my savings printing a few thousand cases, which I fulfilled from my fourth floor Brooklyn walkup, and eventually somehow sold almost all of them. Plans were scrapped to print a follow-up set of 24 more cards including the Reagans, Schwarzenegger, Bill Frist, Giuliani, Sean Hannity, etc. These days packs of Psychedelic Republicans cards still pop up on Ebay, and I may or may not have a few unopened cases gathering dust in my garage. And no, they did not include gum!
